"Broadcast spreader" 2010-10-24
By H. Tupis (Nashville, TN, USA)
This is a very good broadcast spreader. The pneumatic wheels are heavy enough to make the spreader work well. The wheel/axle/spreader gears are encased in plastic which helps minimize corrosion caused by the fetilizers.

"Least Expensive Pneumatic Tire Broadcast Spreader" 2010-07-14
By Jason E. Smith (Maryland)
If your yard has even the slightest deviations from total flatness -- pneumatic tires make a world of difference. They maintain contact, continue spinning, and ensure even distribution of your seed/fertilizer. This is the least expensive pneumatic tire spreader I could locate and it works great -- no issues at all. Setup took two minutes and it was off to the races. They include a calibration guide which listed spread settings for all major brands of seed and fertilizer. Handy. Recommended.

"MUCH better with rubber tires, great price" 2010-04-04
By J. R. Congdon (Chicago)
Almost bought a similar model (red not this green one, similar design, ran about $83) but decided that I needed the fertilizer anyway so checked a new Menard's super center and found this EXACT same model (SB4000PRCGY by Precision) but was on sale for only $47.97 ... we had an old red devil broadcast spreader that was finally stripping its plastic gears and having a tough time going over uneven grass, etc. The rubber tires and bigger hopper makes the Precision something that will hopefully last more than a season, but at this price I'm not worried ... seems to be made well and comes close to being pre-assembled (just have to tighten two wing nuts on the handle). Used it yesterday and the lever, etc. worked quite well, you need to get walking before you start dropping fertilizer as it will leave a pile, but as soon as you shut off the lever it will stop. Rolls much easier over uneven and hilly areas. It also spreads a very wide path so you don't have to make that many passes. Not sure how much longer on sale at Menard's but I'm sure Amazon may offer it at sale prices soon. On another web site I saw this same model at $129.99 so be sure to check all over if you can before buying. It also turns out that this unit is actually mfg in USA (Lincoln, IL) so perhaps that's why I could get it so cheap (we're in the NW Suburbs of Chicago)! This is a step up from the cheapo ones with the plastic wheels --

"Garelick snow roof rake" 2010-04-11
By Dough Boy
Easy initial assembly, easy snap-together extensions for the handle. Used it one time this winter season and the 24" blade did quick work clearing the snow. I look forward to, hopefully, never having enough snow to use it again. Ever. The multiple section design means easy off-season storage. And, it's made in the U.S.A.

"Roof rake" 2010-04-07

This product saved our garage. With all of the snow that we had this year, it put a great deal of weight on our garage roof. This rake made it much easier to get it cleaned off to avoid a collapse.

"Works ok but would rate higher with better locknuts" 2010-03-29
By C. J. Foran
It works for one story within about 4' or so of the edge while standing on level ground. Maybe a ladder could be used, but I didn't try. I didn't buy any 5' extensions, but can imagine that only one more 5' extension would be practical due to flexing of the 20' rake handle as it is. The lock washers were not sufficient (lost a nut after an hour use) and I suggest buying lock nuts with nylon inserts to more permanently fasten the rake head together. I recommend this rake with the lock nut caveat.

haven't got to use it yet for snow since we have not had snow since ordering. Did have to use it to retrieve a shoe my kids kicked off onto the roof and it got it down. Seems sturdy like it will work!

"Snow Rake" 2010-03-22
By P. Church (Fairfax, VA)
I bought this later than I should have--after the Feb 2010 blizzard in No. Virginia. However, shipment was fast (I was a little worried with all the bad weather in the east) and the rake was easy to assemble. It worked well on my garage roof, but this was after some melt and when the snow was heavier. I'm eager to try it with some fresh snow--but not until next winter.

"Northern Ohio" 2010-03-18
By BPK, Tom (Brook Park, Ohio)
Purchased for roof snow removal.

Prompt shipping, arrived as described, easy to assemble.

Handle does flex when adding the 2nd and 3rd extensions, but is manageable.

Did a great job on NEW snow.

Not so great on older frozen over snow, probably due to being lightweight.

However, if you react right away this shovel should do the job for the average house and homeowner.

Also note, I have only used this a few times from January through February 2010.

"Worked Ok, until it broke." 2010-03-03
By John (PHOENIX, AZ USA)
Bought this roof rake after we received record snows in Flagstaff.

Pros:

* Easy to assemble
* Lightweight
* Long enough to reach pretty far back on single story home.

Cons:

* Building this was obviously a tradeoff between sturdiness and lightness. However I think they went too far to make this light. If the extensions are put on it bends and whips around. I'd prefer it if the tube was stiffer, even if that added some weight.
* Strength. After using this for less than an hour one of the cross braces snapped in half. I don't think I was abusing it in any way, I just think they are too thin, or mine had a defect. I'm going to have to jury rig another brace somehow before I can use this gain. Given what these cost, I expected it to be much sturdier.

Overall it did a good job before it broke.

"So-so tool, rude customer service" 2010-02-18
By Bill Kearney (Bethesda, MD USA)
I bought one of these, retail, at a local hardware store. The box came without instructions inside. When I attempted to use it the shovel assembly cracked and broke. Turns out the unit was supposed to come with some braces and bolts for them. No braces, no bolts and no instructions that would have explained this. The pictures on the outside box do not clearly show the braces.

When I e-mailed the company for support they offered to send the braces and bolts at no charge. At the same time the response stated:

"I am sorry that the two braces were not in the carton when you purchased the roof rake, however, why would you use an item that is missing parts and not realize that you might do damage to the rest of the unit?"

Gee, had the unit INCLUDED DIRECTIONS or ALL OF ITS PARTS then maybe I'd have had a chance to use it correctly. Just who's running their support department that thinks it's OK to insult a customer like that? Yeesh.

Fortunately the local hardware store is good about their return policies. I returned it. I would have swapped it out but not after getting that kind of response from the factory. No way I'd want to buy another one from a company that lets their support people respond in that manner.

So I'm buying an all-metal Garelick one instead. I've got a number of other Garelick products on our boat and they make reliable products.

I strongly encourage everyone else to AVOID Suncast products.

"You don't need the Gym after using this tool!" 2010-02-17
By S. Strazza (Washington, DC)
First, let me say the tool works wonderfully. Too good in fact. It bites deep into the snow (even when it has crusted over) and if you're not careful, you could find yourself buried in an avalanche. It is a workout, especially if your house is ranch style and you do everything from the ground. If you don't have upper body strength prior to using this tool, you will after. Note, you should not scrape all the way down to the shingles as this will shorten the shingle's life span. This would happen no matter what tool you used (and I have seen people using metal shovels while standing on the roof. Goodbye roof.) You also need to be aware of what's behind you when all of the handle extensions are in. No sense denting the car when the snow gives way and the shovel comes loose. The tool is pretty indestructible but you can break it if you snag it on a chimney or a gutter and then out of frustration, go postal on it. Lastly, keep the wing nuts hand tight. The tool loses integrity when the parts are loose. Now, my complaint: putting this thing together was not easy. The support struts did not mate flat to the main pole and fitting them took several attempts. READ ALL THE DIRECTIONS FIRST otherwise you'll do what I did and install the button hole upside down. Yes, it does make a difference between the "long side" and the "short side". Wing nut the supports to the main pole first but not competely torqued down. Attach them to the shovel blade, then tighten everything.

"Came in Handy this Past Winter 2010" 2010-07-11
By Kwenon (Virginia USA)
Bought this for my family and they loved it. Really came in handy this past winter 2010 blizzard season when all of the stores like Lowe's and Home Depot were all out of stock and found mine right on Amazon. It did take 2 weeks to receive it but it came in handy when the next big snow storm came.

Great design doesn't hurt your hands when you have mountains of snow to shovel. Excellent product!

"I LOVE this Shovel!" 2010-03-25
By Cynthia A. Cole (Latrobe, PA)
I live in PA, and with the winter we just had, I was doing ALOT of shoveling. I even broke the old shovel that I had, during one of the earlier snow storms. When I tried to get a shovel locally, there were none available. I am glad now, because this is the best snow shovel i've ever used. Removes the snow, and DOES NOT kill your back. I love it!

"Makes me appreciate the quality of every other shovel I've owned" 2010-03-16
By Honest O'Pinion
Assembly. How tough could it be? Insert handle into scoop, fasten, done - right? Apparently not.

There are two screws, and two screw holes in the metal handle. After trying to jam the handle down into the thing far enough to get even one of the holes to match for about 10 minutes, I saw that the plastic in the scoop near the handle was getting lighter (i.e. weakening). So I fought another 10 minutes to get the blasted handle back out, and then had to cut about 4 inches of the grip material off the bottom with a utility knife to get it back in. It was then that I noticed that I could only line up one screw and not the other. Rather than get out the drill and try to make my own hole in this miserable, awkward thing, I just used the one screw and when I went to use it I realized that it was actually more difficult to maneuver than both a proper ergonomic shovel or just even a straight handled one.

Not worth it at any price.

"Great Shovel for Heavy Snow" 2010-03-03
By W. Heidelmark (Western NC)
Great Shovel for really heavy or thick snow otherwise I use the tradition straight shaft version of this same shovel

"a perfect shovel and very sturdy" 2010-02-12
By Alexis
I cannot tell you how great this shovel is. I'm in the DC area and we caught two huge snowstorms. This shovel had arrived a week earlier.

The snow was heavy and packed from the plows. It cut through the snow and ice with less effort then any shovel I've had in the past. The lifting was definitely easier thanks to the design and in no time I was making a nice track through 4 feet of snow.

I'm not a young woman so this was a godsend. Well done Amazon for the quick delivery and Suncast for a well thought out product.

"Easy to assemble" 2010-10-26
By E. Pfeiffer (Ely, MN United States)
First, check your engine oil before starting. Mine had no oil but I was ready for that.
Otherwise, the minimal assembly is easy and obvious. The electric start worked
well. The machine was easy to guide. No snow yet to check out the throwing capacity.
I liked the price for that engine size and an all metal frame...no plastic parts.

...Now, if only winter would not appear this year.

"Terrible when it counts" 2010-10-22
By
If you look at the three dates for the reviews of this item that appear prior to this one you will note that they were made in the late summer or early fall. *Before* the first snowfall.

I bought this machine last year from a warehouse club that has a "no questions asked" return policy. It was terrific and easy to set up and looked great in my garage until the first snowfall.

The first time I took it out it worked great for almost the entire first driveway then the belt slipped off. It took me about 90 minutes to figure out how to get it to go back on. It really takes 2 people to fix. The next time I took it out, it happened again. I was able to fix it faster, but it was the same problem. This is not a fun thing to have to work on when you need to be shoveling snow so you can make it to work on time. The second time it happened I was really careful with repairing it. I made some adjustments and got the belt properly tight. Again the next time it slipped off. I took it back to the store and hired a guy to plow my drive the rest of the winter.

I got a real good look at the machine while I was fixing it and I'm not impressed. There is nothing there that speaks to quality craftsmanship, but an awful lot that says "slapped together with the cheapest parts that fit".

Buyer beware!

"Only useful for the first snow" 2010-10-02
By Dr. Bobolingo
I like clever ideas and I bought a wovel several years ago. It was unique and fun to use on the first snowfall but on the second snowfall I discovered a major problem: it doesn't actually throw the snow very far at all, just a few feet. You quickly build up a berm all around your driveway and then you can't throw the snow over it. Every year I pulled it back out to try it again, but I have never been able to get it to throw snow more than a few feet. Last week I decided it was just wasting my garage space, and I dismantled it and tossed it in the trash.

"snow shoveling can be fun" 2010-03-16

This product makes the thought of snow fall fun. My back was saved. Very easy assembly instructions and the video was very helpful.

Will recommend this product to my friends.

"Works Just as Advertised" 2010-03-15
By Bradley S. Kove (New Canaan, CT United States)
I bought the wovel after seeing how many positive reviews it got. I read many of these reviews and have not much to add. I put the shovel together in less than a half and a hour. Watched the video and after about two hours of using it I was throwing snow like a champ. I did buy the weather strip which was easy to install but was a little anoyed that the shovel didn't come with it. For me this shovel is almost as effective as our snow blower which just wore out this year

"Excellent product!" 2010-03-02
By Shawn Bean (Earth)
I live in the suburbs of Philadelphia and, as you may know, this winter hasn't been kind to us. My wife and I recently moved into a new home and our driveway is about 75 feet long. The first two storms were killers for us. Shoveling 18+ inches of snow took forever. I saw this product in a very old "Popular Mechanics" magazine while in a doctors office. $100 as opposed to an $800 large snowblower? Sure...why not? I have to say, the product works very well. I was able to clear the driveway and sidewalk in about 45 mintes from the last 2 storms! (Granted the wind blew a lot away, but I was still left with 10"-12") I even started after our neighbor began plowing with his tractor and finished before him (although his driveway is a bit longer). Assembly is not that bad, just be sure you secure both ends of the tire around the frame and stretch it as you fit it over the rim. My only major complaints are that the wheel rim is plastic, but no biggie there as it is fairly compact and high strength. The Shovel is also plastic and I would have liked to have seen it be made of metal to accommadate the frame and handle. You do need a little momentum to toss the snow, but it works very well and saves your back. It has a thin profile when disassembled into it's two pieces for storage and hangs easily in the garage. I would definitely recommend this as a great alternative to an expensive, space consuming snow blower.

"Surviving this Northeast winter with my wovel!" 2010-02-27
By K. Snyder (New Rochelle, NY United States)
I ordered late last spring this not knowing at all if it would work, but wanting a green alternative to the snow blower. I had no idea that I would need it this much -- the winter of 2010 has dumped more snow the Southeast New York region than usual. Nevertheless, I am able to clear out the driveway so much faster with the Wovel. The sidewalk is a breeze -- it takes minutes (and I do my neighbor's for the heck of it). I can move more snow than I thought possible. And it's a great work out! Dare I say it...I actually enjoy shoveling snow with the Wovel. Even so, I am hoping for spring. Thank you, Wovel inventors!

"Small size, very good quality" 2010-09-13
By X. He (Boston, MA)
I would say it is smaller than I expect, although I read the description before I buy. Anyway it should be enough for digging your car out of the snow. What I would like to mention is the build quality. It feels sturdy in hand, not like the big plastic snow shovel I used to borrow from the apt management.

"Ingeniously designed and well crafted" 2010-03-31

An ingenious design to collapse a good length handle into a small stow-able sized package. Overall seems sturdy enough, though I have not had to use it yet.

"solid quality" 2010-03-18
By ML King (USA)
I was expecting a half-baked POS, and I got something I think will last for a really long time.

Handle is aluminum, has two sections, seems sturdy. Scoop is decent plastic, better than the cheap snow shovel I had been using. Collapses down to the size of the scoop, and extended it looks as it does in the pic. FYI, it is kinda short for a snow shovel, but that's the point. It fits in your trunk v. well.

"It's a small shovel, but Great." 2010-03-10
By NA (NA)
The product is great, and small. The reach is short. It's around 3 feet in length. Make sure you bend your knees, and keep your back straight. Otherwise, you'll blow your back out. I wouldn't try to shovel a lot of snow with this. That's why I got 2 shovels. The passenger should be able to help me out, just in case.

"So far, so good...." 2010-04-19
By RabbitsFoot (New York City)
This machine does an excellent job of filling the gap between the two-stage gas-powered behemoths and the small underpowered shovel-handle type electric snow throwers. I wanted something that would eat through enough snow and throw it far enough to clean my driveway and sidewalk, without the hassle of maintenance /storage of the gas powered machines. Where we live in the Northeast we only get 3+ inch snow fall a few times per year, and this machine is perfect for that. I've used the Snow Fox twice so far and it has performed superbly in about a foot of recent snow. True to spec, when it was set to throw straight, the range was a good 20ft. When set to right/left the distance shrunk to no more than 3ft, but this is perfectly acceptable for sidewalk cleaning when you want to just create a narrow path for pedestrians. I would recommend the straight setting for driveways.

The Snow Fox comes assembled and all that is required is to screw the handle to the base (with included easy-to-turn screws). This is simple enough and can be done in less than 3 minutes. Removing the handle is a good idea for storage and once removed, the Snow Fox takes up about as much room as one of those dorm-room refrigerators.

I do have a few minor gripes:

-The extension cord management device leaves room for improvement as it does not easily accommodate the larger gauge extension cord plugs.

-While the Snow Fox can take on more than 6" at a time, any piles greater than 12" will need multiple "shavings" to get the job done. The reason I don't take a star off for this is that the only kind of machine that can manage such piles would be the aforementioned gas powered behemoths. In any case, multiple passes with this machine is a lot easier on the back than doing so with a hand shovel. This is a you-get-what-you-pay-for kind of deal.

-The business end (blade) of the machine is made of plastic, and while it does a great job with freshly fallen snow, I would not try it on hardened or iced-over snow that typically forms the day after a snowfall. If possible, use this machine the day of the snowfall to preserve the blade.

I recommend the Snow Fox as a great niche-filler for those like me who do not want to mess with the gas variety (and don't want to spend thousands) but want more power and utility than a small snow thrower. As long as the plastic blade doesn't wear out during subsequent snowfalls I don't see why the Snow Fox wouldn't last me for years to come. If this doesn't turn out to be the case, I'll be back here, updating the review.

"Gets the job done!" 2010-03-28

"Perfect for our mid-Atlantic winters" 2010-03-23
By KG (Rockville, MD USA)
I looked around at other small snow throwers and decided on this one for its light weight and small size (hangs on hooks on a pegboard in our garage). It is really perfect for the small snow falls that we typically get in the mid-Atlantic. We even got good use out of it this year despite the unusually snowy winter. It is very easy to use. Yes, it does have its limitations as other reviewers have noted. You need to use it when snow is no more than 4-5 inches. The left and right throwing angles don't project the snow very far (but the straight shot sends the snow well clear of where you need it to be removed from). Get a good extension cord. A Rigid brand extension cord was recommended to me in Home Depot and it was a good purchase - it doesn't get stiff in the cold. We really are happy we selected this and highly recommend it.

"Worth the money" 2010-03-10
By P. Wylie (USA)
Product performs as advertised. Removes snow quickly and throws it a fair distance. Great for walkways, decks and small driveways. Only negatives are throwing to the side isn't as effective as throwing forward and the entrance for the snow is made of rubber so it wears away quickly. Overall unit is effective at half price of gas powered units.

"Customer service not great" 2010-03-03
By P. Brennan
I bought this for my 75 year old broter in law to help him clear his small driveway. It seems to work okay but it came with a key in the keyhole that we can't seem to remove. I e-mailed the company and they said that sometimes it's a little tight and to just pull on it. We tried and tried but couldn't remove it. I e-mailed again and they said again that sometimes its tight. Well it's not just "tight" it's welded in there. It works so we're not going to the trouble and expense of returning it. We don't want to break the key so we just leave it in there. Luckily there are no small children around. The machine seems to work okay - like others have said it shoots snow better when it's straight ahead. For the small area that he has, it's great.

"Good, but not great" 2010-10-03
By E. Johnson
I bought one of these for my house and my parents bought one shortly after as well. Both of us encountered the same problem. We both started using the 100 ft. 14 gauge (usually blue) power cords that we had purchased for our electric lawn mowers. Big mistake! Both my parent's snow thrower and mine caught on fire where the cord plugs into the snow thrower. I was able to unplug mine right away and it wasn't damaged. My parents were not so lucky and had to have theirs replaced. It works fine when using 16 gauge (usually orange) power cords. The snow thrower does a good job on light snow if it isn't too deep. If the snow is coming down hard you will have to plow after a couple inches because it won't work if the snow is too deep. It also has a hard time with moist slushy snow. Don't even try using it on the thick stuff that builds up after a snowplow goes down the street. For the price though, how easily it starts up, and the fact that you never need to buy gas or oil for it, it is a real bargain. Just be aware of its shortcomings and don't expect it to be able to compete with a good gas snow thrower that cost several times more money.

"DISAPPOINTMENT OF THE ITEMS PURCHASED" 2010-04-09
By Trung M. Tran
Items were specified BRAND NEW but when they arrived, they looked like they have been assemble and took apart. Missing parts and damage. Contacted customer service for replacements and when they arrived, same thing happened to one out of two replaced items, missing parts, damaged, etc.

I AM REALLY DISAPPOINTED of my procuremnts and never recommanded anyone to buy from THIS VENDOR/AMAZON again.

Also, I bought other item (quantity of 4), amazon billed individually instead of combine the total.

"Great for price." 2010-03-30
By Bob Head (Westerville, Ohio)
I really like this Snow Thrower. The assembly was quick and easy. It took me about 10 minutes to get it ready to go.

My first use was in about 6 inches of snow and it did a pretty good job. The snow was so deep, though, that the thrower

had a little trouble clearing so I went over my driveway twice. A week later I had a 4 inch snowfall and the results were

much better.

I have to admit, it is a bit of a hassle dealing with the extension cord. But is is quiet and easy to maneuver.

I am very happy with it.

"Snow Joe to the Rescue" 2010-03-26
By Jerry (Matawan, NJ)
My old Craftsman Electric snowblower worked well for over 17 years, but it stopped working when I was 3/4 done with the first of 3 blizzards this past month. Parts were no longer available for my Craftsman, so I looked for an equivalent replacement. The Snow Joe arrived the day before the third blizzard and worked beautifully in clearing over 100 feet of driveway.

Amazingly, it went so fast all the way to Sweden above the Arctic Circle with this shipment from the U.S.

"snow thrower weight" 2010-10-15
By marvin l britton (WABASHA, MN, US)
I purchased this item as an alternative to shoveling because of a bad back. It was advertized as weighing 12.5 pounds it is closer to 25 pounds. If you have lumar problems don't buy it as you cannot lift it.

"Very powerful machine" 2010-03-14
By L.B. (Northern VA)
This is a pretty powerful item, cause it throws the snow about 30 ft. and it's hard to control. It is a Godsend compared to shoveling snow and is great for not hurting your back. The bad part is it is electric and the cord constantly comes loose.

"Decent shovel for the typical Mid-Atlantic snowstorm levels" 2010-03-10
By Bugman1964 (Leesburg, VA)
I live in the DC area and had to use this item, just after purchase, to clear the results of the last two monster snowstorms we got this year (2010). With that much snow (in the 2 to 3 foot range, plus even bigger drifts and snow-plow created piles in front of the cars), don't expect this snow shovel to clear everything without a large amount of effort. Also, with snow at that level, you can expect to have to use a combination of a regular old shovel and the Toro shovel.

That said, this shovel works quite well if you persist at it, and is quite adequate by itself if the snow level is about 8 inches or less. As other reviewers have said, you have to be careful in which direction - and which angle - you point the thing, otherwise you will get a cloud of fine snow blowing back onto you. You should also make sure to get an electric cord that is rated for the amperage that this shovel requires, to be on the safe side.

Overall, this is a good buy if you have the typical townhouse unit space to clear (I have an end-unit TH with parking spaces for 2 cars - no garage). It won't work as effortlessly as a larger gas-powered snow blower, but then again, you won't have maintenance issues or have to shell out a lot of money for this handy little unit either.

"Toro Power shovel" 2010-03-07
By Frances F. Lea (Virginia)
I was disappointed. The only way this seems to work is on a very flat surface when there is only a little fresh snow. I could have just as easily used a shovel with less lifting.
