I had dinner with my friend who is a licensed electrician and I asked him about the all new Toro Powercurve Snow Thrower, with it's increased 15 amp load. He said modern beaker boxes are designed for a 20 amp load on each breaker circuit. A dedicated circuit should not carry more than 80% of it's captivity, so the 15 amp load of the Toro PowerCurve 1800 should be in the safe range of an individual circuit and should not be a risk of throwing the breaker switch, as long as the Powercurve is plugged into a receptacle that is a dedicated circuit, not sharing it's load with other appliances in the house.
If you have a circuit just for your garage receptacles, you should not have a problem running the 15 amp Power Curve Snow Thrower off of it, as long as you are not trying to run your garage door opener at the same time.
Lord willing, once I have purchased the 2010 Toro 38381 18-Inch 15 Amp Electric 1800 Power Curve Snow Thrower, I'll share my experiences with this machine in this review post.

Like most here, I bought this blower before the Winter arrives. It was a birthday present from me to me, on behalf of my lower back which hurt a lot last Winter from shoveling the snow. At the store where I bought it (HD), the rep kept trying to convince me not to buy it since it wasn't gas and only a 1 stage blower. I can't buy a gas blower as I don't have a garage and the shed is far away from the street and house. Making an electric snow blower my only option if I am to avoid back pain. I also bought the 12 guage 100 foot extension cord to keep it chugging. Besides having to use the cord, I'm worried about how it will work with ice-snow and heavy snow. Those wheels will be a little tough to push in the show, but if I don't have to lift snow with a shovel, I will be satisfied. Yes, I know I have to run it every 8 inches, no problem there. I do this anyway year after year with a shovel as I don't ever want to wake up to 20 inches of snow on the driveway. I just hope it survives a few years. And if this insurance scares away most of the show this Winter, then it met its objective. Sometime this Winter, I'll update this review and post the results of this experiment.

Well - I also purchased early on - couldn't wait to sell my older model CCR1000 Toro - gas powered, and I did! I never got it to start during my winter months only twice last year - and it spent more time in the Repair shop than my use of it - so I said - I'm going electric ! My first purchase sent from the Toro mfg was disappointing - I received this model Toro - however - with missing parts!! Only 1 turn knob and missing washer & screw - incomplete packaging. Well - I had to call Amazon customer service and return the 1st unit sold me - and then they shipped me out another Toro 38381 18-Inch 15 Amp Electric 1800 Power Curve Snow Thrower - well the 2nd box shipment was totally complete with all parts and I was very happy. I also had no problems assembling the unit - as I also had read in an earlier review from someone else - I just followed the instructions step by step - and it was very easy to put together and with very little time. I'm a female and had no problems at all assembling it - actually a piece of cake! It's very light weight unit and easy to handle. I then ordered the matching recommended low temp cord with was displayed with this Toro model on Amazon website - and plugged it all together and tested the unit - it ran just fine. Make sure you read the instruction booklet totally to make sure that the cord is not damaged, so that it will not damage your new Toro Electric Snow blower. Well like the others, I'm waiting for the snow to arrive here in Chicago to totally test the unit and report back on my review. I'm just happy I have an electric snow blower that requires NO maintenance, no gas/oil, just plug and go, a lightweight model and to just be careful of the electric cord. I got the 100' ft - 14 gauge cord that was recommended - plugged into our 15 amp electric outlet in the garage - and it worked just fine. Now my next test is the snowfall here in Chicago - and it get's extremely nasty here. Well - will report back during snow season! At this point, I would definitely recommend this buy! Giving it 5 stars.. but let's report back during blizzard times!

I am now anxiously awaiting our first snowfall.NO MORE SHOVELING! the machine was well packaged (Mucho kudos to Toro for deliberately designing the packaging to be opened and used by one person). I had it assembled in about 10 minutes. I had no problem assembling the upper handle to the lower.I know this was an complaint of earlier owners. As to whether or not Toro fixed this problem, I don't know. All I know is the handle went on easy for me. Machine test-started immediately. Toro lives up to it's name again. I only gave it four because I have not used it in the snow yet. If I remember I will update after the first snow.

I owned a previous Toro 1800 model for probably 7 years (ending in roughly 2000-2001). I'd get my driveway cleaned faster and better than my neighbors using their gas units. But, after 7 years, my Toro finally had it and I decided to get me a gas/oil mix snow blower.
I ended up with two different gas/oil mix units over the past 9 years. One gas snow blower lasted 3 years (I paid about $500 for it). The next one lasted 6 years and is on its last leg (I paid $465) for it.
Now, I FINALLY get to go back to a BETTER Toro 1800 model than the prior model that I loved so much (AND IT IS STILL THE SAME PRICE I PAID FOR MY FIRST UNIT 17 YEARS AGO!). I'm not waiting to purchase this unit since it is only $299 with free shipping. No way am I waiting. This model has been around a long time. That attests to its popularity, reliability and greatness. It will clear 10 inches deep, no problem. I've cleared snow over 18 inches deep, no problem. It chews right through the white stuff and tosses it clear off the drive by up to 30 feet. Powerful for an electric unit. And this latest engine is even more powerful! Can't wait!
I have cleaned up slushy snow (off the street) with this unit in the past. Nice clear path along the curb so the mail person can easily drive up to my mailbox in the winter. As 'convenient' as a gas snow thrower can be (for the simple reason you don't have to watch out for an electric extension cord), I can't stand it when the engine jets crud up and I have to get the doggone gas unit 'tuned' for a $100+. I started straining my oil/gas mixture through my wife's used nylons (a mechanic told me that trick to keep the jets clean from impurities in the gas/oil mix) and that worked well for not needing any further tuneups. But, I always dreaded coming up to the next season 'wondering' if the gas unit would start, how it would idle, and how long it would last before dying on a heavy snowfall day. I NEVER HAD TO WORRY ABOUT SUCH THINGS WITH MY PAST TORO 1800 ELECTRIC SNOWTHROWER! It always started, always ran powerfully, and always did a better job cleaning the driveway than my gas/oil powered units.
So I AM BACK FOR ANOTHER ROUND WITH WHAT APPEARS TO BE A MUCH IMPROVED VERSION (and the other model was already great)! I can't wait for snow to fall now! I'll be ready. I'll be thrilled. I'll be glad to be the ONLY ONE (AGAIN) in our neighborhood with this powerful electric snow thrower. My neighbors have purchased huge, powerful gas units. Man do they rev for 1-2 seasons. Then, I hear them chugging and choking (I know they don't filter their gasoline through nylon stockings) and then I see them loading these heavy gas hogs into their RVs for the semi-annual trip to the tuneup shop. I WILL NOT MISS THAT AT ALL. RELIABILITY, POWER, EFFICIENCY, CLEAN RUNNING, NO POLLUTION, ALWAYS STARTS, ALWAYS RUNS, WORKS LIKE A CHAMPION WORK HORSE, I AM NEVER GOING BACK TO THOSE MESSY GAS/OIL CHUGGERS EVER AGAIN. Not with this beautiful, electric, Toro back in my garage again (FINALLY - WELCOME HOME TORO!)
9/27/2010 - My new Toro arrived on Saturday (9/25/2010). Thanks for the quick shipment, Amazon. My new 100' 12-gauge extension cord arrived today (9/27/2010). Usually I don't look forward to winter. Now all I can say is: I'M READY - BRING IT ON!
